An Unexpected Book Find at my local Thrift Store!

A trip to the thrift store to scan their endless bookshelves full of loved and worn paperbacks is a common activity of mine. At least 3-4 times a month I slip into their book rooms to immerse myself for 30 mins or so of reading book titles with my head tilted sideways! There's nothing quite like finding a book I've been searching for, especially when the books are priced at $1.00 or less each! When I can time it right, I try to visit the thrift store on the 10 books for $1.00 days!

Last week I was at the thrift store and came across this! I saw its spine poking out and knew at that exact moment that I needed it. You know what I'm talking about right? That adrenaline rush that comes when you find a book you've been searching for, or in my case, one that I never thought I'd come across used, but I did. It's not that this book is all that rare, it's just that it's super unique.

If you aren't familiar with this book, allow me to acquaint you. Cain's Jawbone by Torquemada is a literary murder mystery puzzle. I have not read it yet, but let me tell you what I know about it so far...

The book contains a story of six murders and six murderers, BUT the tricky part is... the book is not written in order. That's right, the pages are all mixed up, and you, the reader, have to figure out in what order the pages should go and figure out who killed who! The book was originally published in 1934 with a £15 (British pound) reward for whoever could solve the mystery. Since its publication, nearly 100 years ago, only FOUR people have solved the puzzle, and in 2019 publishers offered a reward once again for those who could solve this literary mystery. You can read more about those who have solved the puzzle here

My husband is not into reading, like not even a little bit (heavy sigh). He did read my kids Animal Farm a few years ago and it was a great experience for everyone, but he has yet to read anything since. That being said, I'm hopeful that this book will intrigue my husband enough to want to read it with me because he is great at solving puzzles and is always up for a good murder mystery. If I'm lucky, maybe it will be something we can both enjoy doing together, and who knows, maybe we will be one of the few to actually save this literary mystery! A girl can dream, right?!
