Plate Holder turned Book Holder

Have I mentioned before that I LOVE books? I adore them. I could live without TV or internet, but I couldn't live without books. I haven't always felt this way though. When I was a child, I had a very difficult time reading and comprehending what I had read. In 2008 at the age of 22 when I was pregnant with my first child, I heard it said that I could start reading to my unborn baby while in utero and he could hear me reading to him.

That's when my love of books really began.

Now that my oldest child is in high school, I still read aloud to him and his three siblings. Being the literature lover that I am, and I'm still trying to instill a love of literature into in my children's lives. Sometimes they roll their eyes at my book of choice, but more times than not they are happy or even eager to read along with me.

I often shop at thrift stores or stop for little libraries to look for multiple copies of the book we are reading, that way all four of us can take turns reading aloud. One child reads one paragraph, and the next child the second paragraph and so on. We go round and round until we are ready to stop. We all get a turn to read, and we are able to finish chapters and whole books together. We can stop to discuss plot points or questions any of us may have.

Being the busy mom I am, sometimes I can't sit down and read, sometimes I have to stand and read with them. The other day while cooking a meal, I plopped my book into my reproposed plate holder and read along with my children. While I have been using this plate holder as a cookbook holder for years. However, this was the first time I've used it in this way and I have to say, it's my new favorite way to use it! It's super convenient and it's so nice not to have to crane my neck to look straight down at the counter, I don't run the risk of getting the book covered in food (with the expectation of a fingerprint here or there when I'm turning the pages), and it looks lovely.

Note: This is not a link to the exact plate holder I have. I've had this plate holder for nearly 20 years, and it was given to me as a gift all those years ago.

For the month of November, my children and I are reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (as pictured). If you haven't read Jane Eyre before, add it to your TBR (To Be Read) list! I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say it's a classic for a reason. Love, death, orphans, monsters, poverty, wealth and more await the reader in this beautifully told tale!

My daughter received a beautiful cloth bound hard back set of four Bronte sisters' books, however beautiful they are, (you can find them here) I wouldn't be able to use them in my plate holder.

I personally love a good paperback so I can annotate, highlight and underline as much as I wish without feeling guilty! As mentioned before, I do try to find our copies from thrift stores or little libraries, but I did purchase the copy in the picture from an independent bookstore

Have you reproposed any household item into a handy dandy book holder? If you have, I'd love to hear about it!

Note: I've provided links to some of the items mentioned in this post and these are things, (or similar items) that I have used and enjoyed. If you choose to purchase these items from Amazon, that's great, but just know that I do not expect you do. I buy most of my items second-hand and I hope you can do the same. I've included links to certain items so you can gather more information about the products I'm referring to or you may purchase them new if you wish. Rest assured; I do not earn any commission from your purchases on Amazon for the items I've provided links to.
